MWCD Lakes
Lakes, camping, boating, hiking, swimming, hunting, and fishing
are some of the recreational activities available at any of the 10 lakes which
make up the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD). The Conservancy,
located in east-central Ohio, has 54,000 acres of land and water available for
recreation and conservation activities.
The MWCD is a different kind of government organization-- it is self
supporting through the fees generated by its operation. Formed in 1933 as a
political subdivision of the State of Ohio, the MWCD covers the watershed area
of the Muskingum River and its tributaries, which
includes 18 Ohio counties (or one-fifth of the state.) The original mandate for MWCD was to assist with
flood control and conservation. Thirteen earthen dams and one concrete dam was constructed to control
flooding with ten reservoirs. These reservoirs now provide ample opportunity for
outdoor recreational activity.
Atwood, Beach City, Clendening, Leesville, and Tappan
Lakes, along with Dover Dam, are all within
easy access of visitors to Tuscarawas County.
Recreational choices abound at Atwood Lake with two
full service marinas, park, campground, swimming beach, public launch ramps, and
hiking trails. Atwood Resort & Conference Center offers an 18 hole golf course,
a 9 hole lighted par tree course, swimming pools, tennis courts and vacation
cabins along with dining in a first-class resort facility. Atwood Lake is
located on State Routes 212 and 542 near New Cumberland and Dellroy.
